Friday: 5 really awesome facts you didn't know about LED Lighting

Posted by Leonie Ferrer on

Introducing Number One: How the **** do we get away with the lack of moths in our office?

We were sat in the office last week pondering the moth to a flame concept, and we thought ‘why aren't bugs and insects attracted to our lighting?’. Then we realised… It might not be so much about the type of light bulb as it is the "COLOUR Spectrum" (emitted by the lamp you have chosen; incandescent light emits a spectrum known as IR or infrared). Whilst this serves as a useful bandwidth to the human eye, insects seem uncontrollably drawn to IR and blue spectrum light sources. “Bug Zappers” take advantage of this well known suicidal phenomenon to attract and kill nearby insects. By changing your front porch or even your interior lighting to “Warm White” LED Downlights, insects from outside will be less likely drawn onto or into your home. Insects are however drawn towards the blue spectrum.

*LED lights with color temperatures of 3200k or higher (cool white) will definitely attract insects*

2. Sea Turtles Making Sweet Love?

Yep. Believe it or not amber LEDs have been utilized in coastal areas to help Sea Turtles navigate without interference with their breeding activities. Sweet.

3. LED Makes Better Sandwiches.

When LED Lighting is used in delicatessen counters and safe havens of fresh food, it has been proven to breed significantly less bacteria than their halogen or fluorescent counterparts. Nice work. We’ll bear that in mind next time we’re on the move. No bacteria is good bacteria!

4. The LED was created by an absolute legend in the 60’s

Nick Holonyak, Jr, the Godfather of the visible LED light invented the LED whilst working for General Electric in 1962. Turns out it took over 40 years for the idea to finally become accepted as a global phenomenon by the masses. Remember this next time you meet a mad scientist!

5. Its All About Energy

An incandescent lamp converts about 9-10% of the energy fed to it into light, whereas LEDs convert almost 100%of the energy they consume as light. Not bad.

And there we have it! Our top five LED Lighting facts of the day. If you fancy finding out a bit more about the quirks and random facts on LED’s give us a shout on 1300 480102 or email us at electronicwholesalersonline@gmail.com
